Will Smith introduced yesterday that he has resigned from the Academy of Motion Pictures Arts & Sciences. The actor posted an apology on Instagram the morning after he slapped comic Chris Rock on stage. Millions of people internationally considered and commented on the dramatic incident, quickly making viral memes out of the photo of Smith slapping Rock.
Now Smith says he needs to commit himself to altering his behaviour. The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, who run the Academy Awards, or Oscars, released an announcement yesterday saying it’s going to move forward with disciplinary proceedings in opposition to Will Smith for violations of the Academy’s requirements of conduct, forward of its board meeting on April 18.
For his half, Smith says altering his behaviour will take time.
“Change takes time and I am committed to doing the work to make sure that I by no means again allow violence to overtake reason”.
He added that he will accept whatever penalties the Academy’s board deems applicable.
Smith slapped Rock in a spontaneous outburst after Rock made a joke about Smith’s spouse, Jada Pinkett Smith. Jada suffers from alopecia, a illness that develops when the body assaults its personal hair follicles. The disease may cause hair loss anywhere on the physique. At Super secret , Rock jokingly referred to as Jada “G.I Jane”.
While video footage reveals Smith initially laughing at the joke, Jada may be seen clearly unamused. Even although Smith initially laughed, he quickly marched on stage and slapped Rock.
Pundits say the Academy is likely to sanction the actor with a brief membership suspension. But it’s unlikely that his award for Best Actor will be revoked, following the custom of awarding business professionals for his or her work, not their lives (i.e. Roman Polanski and Harvey Weinstein).
