In an effort to scale back Channel crossings, Rishi Sunak has introduced the acquisition of two extra barges to accommodate asylum seekers. The prime minister didn’t disclose the placement of the barges, but confirmed they’d have the capacity to house an additional one thousand migrants who enter the UK illegally. The government has already secured the Bibby Stockholm, a ship that can provide lodging for about 500 male asylum seekers off the Dorset coast.
Sunak revealed that the primary ship will dock in Portland within two weeks, and two more barges have been secured. He mentioned, “To cut back pressures on native communities, we will also house individuals on ships. The first will arrive in Portland within the subsequent fortnight and we’ve secured another two right now.” Furthermore, Sunak mentioned that hundreds of additional spaces for migrants had been found in motels by making folks share rooms.
